Mail Carriers and Minnesota Bicyclists: Two of a Kind
"Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds." That's the unofficial motto of the U.S. Postal Service, a paraphrase of Roman historian Herodotus' tribute to ancient Persian messengers that is inscribed on a post office in New York City.
It could also apply to Minnesota's growing legions of bicycle commuters. So it's only fitting that during the recent Twin Cities Bike Walk Week the Postal Service released a new set of bicycling commemorative stamps in Minneapolis, widely hailed as the best biking city in America. The four stamps illustrate stages of bicycling from a young child on training wheels to a BMX racer.
The new "Forever" stamps are available for 45 cents each at any post office. First-day-of-issue postmarks can be obtained until Aug. 6 from the Main Post Office at 100 S. First St., Room 127, Minneapolis MN 55401.
U.S. postage stamps have featured cars, trucks, trains and airplanes in the past. It's nice to see some celebrating America's fastest-growing mode of transportation.
